Hi Friend,

This past week felt like a full return to real life, and before diving in, a quick welcome to those of you who are new here. I’m so glad you found your way to Sprout!

So, speaking of what we're actually doing: we're back. Back to work (boo), back to daycare, back to reality after two glorious weeks of holiday chaos. Jamie was definitely mad at us about the whole daycare situation and gave us the cold shoulder Monday night and Tuesday morning, but by midweek, he seemed to have forgiven us 🙏.

Here's the thing though, David didn't really get a break from work during the holidays, so we've been trying out some things to make our lives easier. First up: grocery pickup at Harris Teeter. I finally understand why there's always a line of Tahoes, Suburbans, and other unnecessarily large SUVs waiting in the pickup area. It's a total game changer. Time saver, money saver (because I'm not impulse-buying everything that looks remotely delicious), and I didn't have to wrestle a toddler through the produce section.

We've also been doing laundry service. Don't judge! We send out our dirty clothes and they come back a couple days later fully washed and folded so perfectly it makes me want to find a YouTube video on how to properly fold clothes because apparently I've been doing it wrong my entire life. If you want to try it out - here's a free load on me!

And the biggest lifesaver? Jamie's grandma and papa watched him Friday and Saturday so David and I could actually rest and recover. After two weeks of juggling work and no daycare, we desperately needed it. Honestly, after that experience, I bow down to stay-at-home parents. You're all rockstars, and I have no idea how you do it ✨.

🌱 What We’re Doing

Your roundup of family-friendly events and activities happening this week.

We were really spoiled in December with all of those holiday events, weren’t we? January always feels a little quieter by comparison, but honestly, that slower pace can be a gift.

Fair warning, there are a lot of library storytimes on the calendar this week. I tried to be thoughtful about which ones to include, focusing on programs with fun themes, movement, or something a little extra beyond sitting and listening. Weeks like this also make me especially grateful for one of the last truly free places we can go with kids, where everyone is welcome and expectations are low.

You’ll also find a mix of cozy winter experiences, nature programs, and a few easy weekend outings that work for different ages and energy levels. Nothing over the top, just solid, feel-good options that fit real life.

✨ A few standouts:

  • Carolina Raptor Center programs on Saturday, with flexible drop-in times to meet birds of prey or join a keeper chat.
  • Snow Days at Discovery Place Science, an immersive indoor winter experience with sock skating, hands-on exhibits, and a cozy Hygge corner.
  • Sprouts at Stowe: Snowmen + Snowflakes, a toddler-friendly mix of songs, stories, and crafts inside the Gardens.

🌳 Where We’re Playing

Your featured park, playground, or indoor play spot.

There's something special about parks that feel like the heart of their neighborhood, and Latta Park is exactly that. Tucked in Dilworth just blocks from Sunflour Bakery, this 31-acre spot has playgrounds for toddlers and big kids, a splash pad for summer, and walking trails perfect for pushing a stroller. The best part? Real bathrooms (not porta-potties!) and that easy coffee-to-park walk that makes the whole morning feel effortless. It's become one of our favorite Charlotte outings for a reason.

🍪 What We’re Eating: Sunflour Bakery

Sunflour Baking Company has followed me through every chapter of my Charlotte life: Plaza Midwood in my hungover twenties, NoDa breakfast dates with David, Ballantyne during maternity leave with newborn Jamie, and now Dilworth with my toddler. Their croissants are made with a three-day fermentation process and they're legitimately some of the best in Charlotte. The cheddar biscuits put them on the map for good reason. It's a family-owned bakery that makes everything from scratch daily, and honestly, it's become part of my story. Read about why this place means so much.

💡 What We’re Learning

A quick tip, insight, or reflection from a local expert or parent.

We survived Jamie's first haircut at Snip-Its Park Road, and by "survived," I mean he screamed through the whole thing while the incredibly patient stylist worked around me holding him. But here's what I learned: Snip-Its knows exactly what they're doing. They've got all the kid distractions (TVs, bubbles, toys), a super efficient haircut process, and a first haircut package with photos and a certificate. The whole thing was $37 with tip and took minutes despite the chaos. We immediately walked to Jeni's for birthday cake ice cream, and all was forgiven. Lesson learned: pick a place that's seen a thousand toddler meltdowns before, and always have an ice cream backup plan.

📅 What We’re Looking Forward To

A sneak peek at upcoming events and seasonal fun around Charlotte.
2026_DOG_DAYS_DELIVERABLES_1900x800-100

February 7th can't come soon enough. Dog Days of Winter at the Whitewater Center is back with dogs on the ice rink (yes, really), a 5K Dog Jog, vendor village, adoption events, and even a Paint Your Pet workshop. Free to attend, which makes it perfect for families with little ones. Jamie will love watching all the pups, and honestly, it's just nice to have a reason to get outside in the winter that doesn't require bundling him up for a full hike. Plus, all those rescue dogs looking for homes? My heart.
