Hall Family Farm moved out of Ballantyne and now lives at 445 W Rebound Road in Lancaster, SC. We went with David, Jamie, and Annie, plus friends with a toddler named Hadley and three friends who don't have kids. My verdict is that the donuts are worth the drive, the animals are not, and you should get there when they open.

#### Getting There

The farm is at 445 W Rebound Road in Lancaster, SC 29720, near Van Wyck. It's about 20 minutes from Ballantyne, 40 minutes from SouthPark, and 50 minutes from Uptown. We made a morning of it and stopped at Ballantyne Bowl on the way down, got coffee at Fly Kid Fly, and picked up bagels from Pop Up. The fall season runs through Sunday, November 1, so this weekend is the last one, and the farm says the forecast for Sunday is not great. Go Friday or Saturday.

They open at 9am, and we got there at 9:02am. The lot already had a lot of cars in it, and 9am was still the right call. There were maybe 10 people in front of us in line and it moved fast. When we left, there were probably 100 people in line just to get in. A colleague of mine told me he showed up around 11am on another day over the weekend, took one look at the line, and didn't end up going in.

#### Before You Go: The Waiver

Entry starts with a line for the waiver, and there's a QR code you can scan on your phone while you wait. You can also do it before you get there, and there's a faster line if you already signed. Do it at home. You need one for everybody who might do something like the hayride, the gemstone mining, or the goat walk. I filled one out for Jamie and myself, David filled out his own, and we didn't fill one out for Annie because I don't think she needs one.

After the waiver line there's a second line where you can prepay for activities. We skipped it because you can buy most of those things at other stalls, like the coffee shop, so we breezed through. All of this happens inside a shop, and everything in it is for sale. If you have a toddler who points at things and asks to buy them, consider this your warning.

#### The Donuts

Our first stop was hot apple cider, coffee, and apple cider donuts. I'm from New England, so I'm spoiled on apple cider donuts, and I haven't found a good one in the Carolinas or Virginia. Some are okay but have the wrong texture. Some are good but leave a weird taste in the back of my mouth or a coating on the roof of it. These are quintessential New England apple cider donuts. They're worth the trip on their own, and I know that's a big statement. You can buy them by the single or by the half dozen.

The coffee was good too, with cappuccinos and a bunch of flavors, but the line was long even at 9am, so I got a drip coffee and got out of there.

#### What's There

- **Animals:** pigs, goats, and maybe some chickens.
- **Fire truck with a slide:** extremely fast, and more of a dad activity.
- **The "seahorse":** buried tires you can climb on, shaped like a Loch Ness monster type dragon.
- **Wooden cutouts** you can put your face in, and a kids' maze made of chicken wire and sticks.
- **The goat walk:** what the older kids go for. From what I could tell it's high ropes, with a low ropes option for younger kids.
- **Hayride, gemstone mining, and the pumpkin patch.**
- **The 7-acre corn maze:** this year's theme is United States history, with nine puzzle challenges, and the farm estimates it takes one to two hours. It was just ranked the No. 9 corn maze in America in USA TODAY's 2026 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.
- **Food:** the coffee shop, plus a pizza truck and plenty of other options.

#### Our Experience

The animals were our first stop, and they were underwhelming. There's a lot of competition around town with Anne Springs, Two Little Acres, and The Hunter Farm, and this was a couple of pigs, a couple of goats, and maybe some chickens. The pen is big for them, which sounds nice until you realize it means they were all really far away. It was also really cold, so maybe that made a difference.

What Jamie loved was the fire truck with the slide. I think I was the only mom who went down it. I only went because Jamie made a beeline for the stairs and was already at the top before I could catch him, so I had to go down with him. It was extremely fast. He loved it. He also loved what he called the seahorse, and he and Hadley spent lots of time on it.

We brought our Veer wagon instead of the stroller, and I think that was the right choice. The terrain isn't paved, Jamie walked most of the time, and the wagon held the diaper bag and gave him somewhere to sit. We had a car seat adapter for Annie.

Annie is not an outside winter girly. She was bundled up to high heaven, warm everywhere except maybe her face, and she was uncharacteristically fussy. She wouldn't take her bottle, wouldn't be consoled, and wouldn't nap. I ended up in the coffee shop, out of the wind, trying to get a bottle into her, and that didn't work either because there was too much for her to look at. So we skipped the hayride and left early. Jamie got to sit on a tractor before we left, and he loved it.

The other families did the hayride. We didn't do the gemstone mining, the corn maze, or the pumpkin patch, so I can't tell you about those. I would absolutely go again, maybe on a day that isn't so cold. With a newborn it's kind of a roll of the dice, and you just hope they're in a good mood. The toddler loved it, and I think older kids would love it even more.

#### What I'd Tell My Best Friend

Get there right when they open. Sign the waiver before you leave the house. Order the donuts before you do anything else. Bring the wagon. Go see the animals since they're free, but don't make them your reason for the drive.
