The Indoor Favorites
Little Story Dream Machine and Sesame Street Story Cards
We already had the actual Story Dream Machine from last Christmas, so this year we just grabbed new story cards, this time Sesame Street. Jamie pulls this thing out constantly and listens to the same story on repeat so many times I've genuinely thought it was broken. It's not broken. He just really loves Elmo. If you have a toddler who needs a break from screens but still wants "a show," this is the move.
PAW Patrol Rescue Book Box
Full disclosure, Jamie has never once watched PAW Patrol. He just saw the books and toys in stores and decided he was obsessed, so now he can name every dog in the crew despite zero screen time with the show. We already had the Elmo version of this box set, and this one gets the same treatment: he brings it to me, says "dump," and dumps every single book onto the floor so he can pick. Last week he picked the same book four times in a row and refused to let us read anything else. That's toddlers for you.
Magna-Tiles Storage Case
Magnatiles have completely taken over our house, so this storage box (holds up to 300 tiles, we're not there yet, but we're getting there) has become essential. His favorite activity is still just dumping the whole thing out. Then he'll point at the box and say "build that," and we have to figure out how to reverse-engineer whatever's on the packaging. He also loves asking us to build a "home" for the little animals that come with some sets, or a tunnel for his cars.
Interactive Firefly Flashlight Book
This one surprised me. It's a pop-up book, which usually means a short lifespan in our house, but it's stayed intact so far. It comes with a real working flashlight built in, so he can make shadow puppets on the wall, plus buttons for each animal that play their actual sound (owl hoot, cat meow, you get it). This is the kind of gift that looks like a gimmick in the box and then actually holds up.
Green Toys Bath Boat and Sea Plane
Jamie discovered these at his cousin's house and would not stop talking about them until he had his own. Now they're his favorite bath toys, hands down.
Construction Car Set - Gigglescape (Target) ($10, we grabbed it on clearance for $7)
This was an accidental clearance find and it's been a huge hit, mostly because Jamie's obsessed with his construction books and now gets to match what he sees on the page to an actual toy. He'll spot an excavator in a book, then go find the excavator car. Same with the dump truck. It's basically flashcards that also happen to be toys.
Emergency Car Set - Gigglescape (Target) ($10, another clearance grab)
The upgrade pick once the construction set was a hit. This one has buses (he's obsessed) and a fire truck. He's also started assigning ownership: my mom always gets the red bus, but Jamie insists the school bus is his. No idea where that logic came from, but I love it.
Melissa & Doug Wooden Scoop & Serve Ice Cream Counter
This one came with a warning label attached: my mom bought it after hearing it was a huge hit from my sister-in-law's kids, and it is. Jamie knows all the flavors, stocks the scoops, and has strong opinions about who gets what (a cone here, a cup there). He hasn't figured out the actual scooper yet, he's still just stacking cones by hand, but that's clearly coming. One tip: price check before you buy. We almost paid $60 for it at Target before realizing it was $35 on Amazon. It's since evened back out, but don't assume the store price is the best price.
The Backyard Overhaul (Mostly Secondhand)
We just finished our backyard patio renovation, so Jamie's "theme" this birthday was outdoor toys, partly because we wanted him to actually use the new space, and partly because we're hoping he can start playing out there solo once Annie's a little older. Here's the bossy tip of this whole guide: almost everything below we bought secondhand, either at the WeeSale consignment sale or off Facebook Marketplace, and I cannot recommend that route enough if you're building an outdoor play area from scratch. New, this stuff adds up fast.
Step2 Scout & Slide Climber
This was his big gift. I got it secondhand for $150. It runs about $300 new, and mine came already assembled, which honestly might have been worth $150 on its own. He climbs the ladder, goes down the slide, spins the wheel, the whole thing. We had friends over this weekend so he could try out his new toys, and this was the first thing every single kid ran to. I think it's going to get a lot of use.
Tiny Land Mud Kitchen - DuoPlay ($189.99)
Jamie's aunt got him this one because her kids have it and are obsessed. It's got a real working faucet and a 4 liter water tank, plus a stovetop that lifts off to reveal a sensory bin for digging. Despite the name, you don't actually have to use mud. Jamie, who cannot handle a messy hand, skipped the mud entirely on his birthday and just used it as his own personal water table. Whatever gets the outdoor toy played with, honestly.
Little Tikes EasyScore Basketball Hoop ($50)
Got two of these on Facebook Marketplace, one blue and one pink, for $15 total. Annie obviously isn't using hers yet, but it's already claimed for when she's older. They didn't come with balls, but those were cheap to grab separately on Amazon. Jamie's not exactly running drills yet, but he's interested, and it's become a thing he and David do together.
Little Tikes Slide (or the budget-friendly version)
We got ours secondhand for $25. It's the easy-to-store version, which runs $103 new on Amazon, so if you want to skip the secondhand hunt, I've linked the cheaper new option too.
Little Tikes 3-Foot Trampoline
This one has a story. I found it free on the side of the road, someone was clearly getting rid of it, faded and a little beat up from being left outside. It runs over $80 new. Jamie doesn't care about cosmetics, but he also hasn't used this one much yet. He has been asking to jump a lot lately (RIP our couch cushions), so I might pull it back out and see if it clicks. If it does, I'll go find a nicer used one on Marketplace.
Step2 Up & Down Roller Coaster
Honest confession: we don't actually own this one yet. It runs $140 new, but I checked Facebook Marketplace while writing this and found listings from $25 to $75 depending on condition. I see it constantly and everyone who has one raves about their kid loving it. I've been tempted more times than I'll admit. It's usable outdoors, which was the thing holding me back, so this is probably next on our list.
Little Tikes Rocking Horse
This was an easy call. Jamie rides one of these at daycare, and I swear I get a photo of him on it almost every single day. So when I spotted one at the WeeSale consignment sale for $7 (it runs about $30 new on Amazon), I didn't even hesitate. Zero guesswork required when you already know exactly what your kid loves.
Micro Mini LED Scooter ($109.99)
Jamie's grandparents got him this one, along with a helmet, knee pads, and gloves. We picked this specific scooter because he already rides one at daycare and our neighbor has the same one, so he was primed to want it before it even arrived.

Pretend Play Mailbox
Got this one completely free through our Buy Nothing group. I use it for his birthday cards, but the real magic is that I randomly drop little surprises in there throughout the week, a note, some stickers, whatever I've got. He just got a new winter jacket from Primary that came with stickers, so those are going straight in the mailbox for him to find after daycare.
