*Mom League gave me this membership for free in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own, including the one complaint.*

Annie was a week old when Mom League started, so I missed the first Thursday. I walked into the second one with a 2 week old and no idea what to expect, and nobody made it weird that I was the new one. Everyone's babies were within a few weeks of each other, Annie was the youngest in the room, and the welcome was warm enough that I didn't feel like I'd missed a beat.

![](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-21-57-7940-PM.png?width=1288&height=1506&name=image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-21-57-7940-PM.png)

I would 100% recommend it. Here's the long version.

### What Mom League is

Mom League runs a Newborn Series for moms and babies in Charlotte, and ours met Thursdays at 1:00pm at The Bunny Hive (1207 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203). According to the Mom League FAQ, classes run about 90 minutes and a new series starts every month. Babies are usually about 2 weeks old or older when they join, which is exactly where Annie landed.

![FC07B9AE-39EC-4C08-BF79-C6BD66348C6B\_1\_105\_c](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/hs-fs/hubfs/FC07B9AE-39EC-4C08-BF79-C6BD66348C6B_1_105_c.jpeg?width=500&height=667&name=FC07B9AE-39EC-4C08-BF79-C6BD66348C6B_1_105_c.jpeg)

There were 10 of us, all with similar-age babies, and a few of us were second-time moms. That mix mattered more than I expected. The first-timers had the questions, the second-timers had the "oh, that passes" energy, and nobody got weird about either.

There's also no expectation that you show up every week. I missed a couple of classes because I was back in the hospital (the full story is in [Annie's Birth Story](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/the-charlotte-sprout-blog/annies-birth-story)), and other moms missed for beach trips and family stuff. It was never a big deal. Laura's recap emails and the handouts folder kept us caught up, and the group chat did the rest.

The welcome email says to expect yoga mats, but we sat in chairs in a circle instead.

*Side note: I already own a [BackJack Floor Chair](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009E98AVO?th=1) at home. A friend who did Mom League before me said they're amazing for sitting on the floor with a baby and a toddler while they play, and she was right.*

### Meet Laura

Our instructor was [Laura Handley](https://www.carolinafamilyandmaternalcounseling.com/meet-laura), a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) who runs Carolina Family and Maternal Counseling in Matthews. She has extra training in perinatal mood disorders through Postpartum Support International, and she's a parent herself. On the last day, someone told her she has a very calming voice, and the whole circle nodded like they'd been waiting to say it. In a room full of anxious new moms plus me, that voice earns its keep.

### Highs and lows

Every class started with highs and lows, or circled back to them after the guest speaker. It sounds small. It was my favorite part.

![5C78CCCA-6ED9-45AE-BB6B-EF5CD4066410\_1\_105\_c](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/hs-fs/hubfs/5C78CCCA-6ED9-45AE-BB6B-EF5CD4066410_1_105_c.jpeg?width=500&height=667&name=5C78CCCA-6ED9-45AE-BB6B-EF5CD4066410_1_105_c.jpeg)

Within a few weeks you knew who was fighting with an in-law, who was dreading going back to work, whose husband got home at 3:00am from a closing, and whose coat closet had just revealed water damage on top of everything else. One mom admitted she'd been up at 2:00am spiraling over the 4 month sleep regression. Another mom jumped in to say she'd been just as paranoid with her first, and it turned out not to be bad at all. There is hope, and I watched it get handed across the circle in real time. We cheered for a first date night after a baby like it was a graduation.

You hear the update the next week, too, which is the part nobody tells you about support groups. The tongue tie release gets a follow-up. The bad night gets a good night.

### The group chat

Okay, the group chat. It's where Thursday keeps going the other six days, and it is aggressively useful. Need to know how long a birth certificate takes in Charlotte? Two weeks, according to the moms who've already done it. Wondering if you really need the 8oz bottles for daycare yet? You'll get a handful of different answers, every one of them confident, which is honestly the best preview of parenting I can give you. One mom found out the Philips Avent Soothie pacifier doesn't change size between the 0 to 3 month and 3 to 18 month versions, only the texture, so we all just learned that together. Somebody needed a strapless bra for a wedding on Saturday and got actual recommendations. Somebody else passed along a 3 to 4 month sleep guide a friend had sent her, and we all said yes please. The postpartum hair loss jokes never stop... and one of us is shocked she isn't bald yet.

 ![7EF1ED4F-872F-45AA-8DA9-E6D90C8617BE\_1\_105\_c](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/hs-fs/hubfs/7EF1ED4F-872F-45AA-8DA9-E6D90C8617BE_1_105_c.jpeg?width=500&height=1087&name=7EF1ED4F-872F-45AA-8DA9-E6D90C8617BE_1_105_c.jpeg)

It's also where the hard days get handled. When one mom dropped her baby at daycare for the first time and went back to work the same day, the chat showed up in force, and the running theme was that it's harder on the parents than the baby. We still try to meet for coffee or a walk on Thursdays.

When I asked the group what I should make sure to mention, one of them said the best parts were having a community in early postpartum, having something to get out of the house for every week, and of course the group chat. I have nothing to add to that.

### The guest speakers

The series runs 8 weeks, and Laura leads most of them herself. Here's how ours broke down. The weekly topics are the same for every group, but the guest experts change from group to group, so don't count on getting the exact people we had.

- **Week 1:** Introductions and birth stories, for anyone who felt like sharing
- **Week 2:** Baby feeding, with Sydney Estes of Hope Feeds Families
- **Week 3:** Maternal mental health and relationship changes, led by Laura (she warned us she was bringing Kleenex)
- **Week 4:** Pelvic floor and the postpartum body, with Dr. Quana Jackson
- **Week 5:** Infant sleep and boundaries
- **Week 6:** Infant development and mom guilt, with Dr. Trey Williams
- **Week 7:** Returning to work (or not) and childcare
- **Week 8:** Reflecting on the whole thing, plus group photos and mom and baby minis

Three of those weeks bring in a local expert, and every one of ours was knowledgeable and nobody was judgy, which matters when you're asking a stranger why your baby is making that noise. A feeding specialist and a pelvic floor doctor are exactly the contacts you want in your back pocket before you need them.

![](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-41-50-2879-PM.png?width=500&height=496&name=image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-41-50-2879-PM.png)

### Our feeding expert: Sydney Estes

Sydney's company is Hope Feeds Families, and Laura sent us home with a recap. The bottle tips were the most useful thing I heard all week:

- A 25 minute feeding is too long. If it runs past that, something needs adjusting, whether that's bottle flow, timing, or position.
- Mix and match bottles and nipples until you find the right fit. Her suggested flow progression was Pigeon Super Slow Flow, Lansinoh Extra Small, Pigeon Slow Flow, then Lansinoh Small.
- Pacifiers are fine. If the baby needs to suck but doesn't seem hungry, a pacifier is allowed.
- Never put gas drops in the bottle, because it's a choking hazard. Give them on their own.
- Bonus tip: pull the inserts out of the bottle washer and you fit more bottles.

### Our child development expert: Dr. Trey Williams

![](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-42-21-7984-PM.png?width=500&height=431&name=image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-42-21-7984-PM.png)

Dr. Trey Williams is a board-certified pediatrician with an MD from MUSC and an MBA from UNC Chapel Hill, and he's the founder of The Peds MD. He talked for a good while before opening it up to questions, and a lot of what he said went straight into my notes app.

- **Milestone checklists make everyone more anxious.** He is not a fan of the questionnaires. A 2 month old who isn't cooing yet is normal. Only about half of kids walk by 12 months and about 75% by 15 months. What he actually worries about is global delay, meaning a kid who is behind across the board, not one missed item on a list.
- **Babies develop head down and center out.** A 2 month old doesn't know her hands belong to her. Reaching shows up around 4 to 6 months, and core strength comes around 6 to 9 months. It explains a lot about a newborn's flailing.
- **Ignore the birth weight.** He said he never tells parents the number, because 18 hours of IV fluids can put half a pound on a baby. Length measurements on squirmy babies are also not reliable. Watch the curve after the 4 month visit.
- **Babies are noisy because of plumbing.** The muscle at the top of a baby's stomach stays open until around 9 months, so milk and acid sit at the back of the throat and everybody sounds like they're snorkeling. If your baby is actually uncomfortable, that's a different conversation with your pediatrician.
- **Sleep training has more than one road.** He walked through cry it out, the chair method, and modified Ferber, and he was clear that no program works for 100% of babies. If it doesn't work for yours, that's not your fault.
- **The baby drives the bus.** His line for newborn families: you are strapped in the back, the baby has the wheel, and around 4 months you get to start steering a little.

Then the questions started and the room turned into a very good group therapy session for feeding. Bottle nipple sizes, spit-up volume, and how much milk is enough all got answers. I'm keeping those out of the newsletter because every baby is different, but the quick version is that "is it growing and developing" beat almost every other question.

I'll also tell you about his practice, because half the room asked. The Peds MD is a concierge practice that does house calls. Checkups run one to two hours, you can text him directly 24/7, and he doesn't have a front desk. Half the room had a toddler story about refusing to stand on the scale at the pediatrician, and a house call dodges that whole situation. According to his website, primary care memberships run $250 to $600 per family per month, house calls cover Charlotte within 30 miles of 28203, and you join by inquiry only. The Primary Care plan has a minimum of 6 months or until your child's first birthday, whichever is longer. As a Mom League graduate you get 10% off the monthly membership for a first child, so ask about the current terms when you inquire.

### The last class

The final class is for reflecting on the whole 8 weeks, and it comes with a photographer who does group photos and mini sessions with each mom and baby. Chrissy Winchester was booked for ours, but she had to reschedule because of illness, so Svetlana Baker stepped in. Your photographer may vary. You get one photo free and the rest of the gallery at a discount. Shoes are allowed at The Bunny Hive that day, which is the closest thing to a victory lap you get. The group shot in front of the Bunny Hive sign is a keeper, and the babies all had little alert faces for it. Your gallery gets emailed to you a couple of weeks later, so if you're waiting on it, check your promotions or spam tab first. That was the fix for at least one of us.

![](https://www.thecharlottesprout.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-45-12-2278-PM.png?width=1156&height=1236&name=image-png-Oct-14-2026-10-45-12-2278-PM.png)

Now there's a photo of Annie at that age, in that room, with that group.

### Getting there

- **Parking:** There's a small lot behind the building plus street parking on Dilworth Rd. The Harris Teeter lot is off limits now and they tow, so don't try it.
- **Strollers:** Use the back door. The sign says "no entrance" and it's just a fire code sign. Go in anyway.
- **Shoes:** Off, with cubbies. Bring socks.
- **Bring:** A Boppy or nursing pillow, nut-free snacks, water, and coffee.
- **Leave on time:** Another Bunny Hive class starts at 3:00pm, so pack up when we finish.
- **Coffee after:** Backyard Brew is right across the street, and it has stairs up to the entrance, so it is not stroller friendly. We helped each other up. If you walk over, move your car out of the private lot first.

### What we'd change

We all agree on this one: Mom League needs an infant class. The series wraps up right when we're finally feeling confident about getting out of the house with a baby, and we'd all keep going into the next stage. Laura said groups often host a first birthday party together, and I know our group definitely will. The group chat is the proof, since we still try to meet on Thursdays while some of us are on leave.

One more suggestion from the group: add a sleep consultant to sleep week. Better guidance would have been nice, and sleep is the topic where you can feel it most.

### Mom League grad perks
