Rhino Market South Park: Our Go-To Charlotte Spot (Even in Winter)

We first discovered Rhino Market years ago in NoDa, back when we were young, childless, and blissfully unaware that "sleeping in" would one day mean 7am. We'd walk there from our apartment regularly, drawn in by their consistently delicious food and welcoming atmosphere. Life looked different then, but great breakfast sandwiches are forever. It wasn't until this past summer, though, that we truly fell in love with their South Park location.

A Note on Timing
Jamie's been sick this week, so we haven't made it out anywhere new. I was planning to save this review for summer when the patio is at its peak, but sometimes life has other plans. (See: toddler with a cold.) The truth is, Rhino Market is just as great in winter. We still go regularly, even if we're sitting inside instead of on those amazing patios. It's cozy, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and Jamie inevitably ends up wandering around getting cream cheese on the Connect Four discs. It's that kind of place.

The Perfect Summer Refuge
Let me back up to how we discovered this spot. Finding outdoor seating in Charlotte that checks all the boxes is surprisingly challenging. We wanted somewhere shaded but not buggy, cool but not crowded, casual enough to drop in without a reservation, and more substantial than just a couple of tables with umbrellas. The South Park Rhino Market became our answer to this search.

Their two front patios covered with canopies are absolute game-changers. Something about how the space is situated on the street keeps it remarkably cool even during Charlotte summers. This discovery transformed our routine last summer. We could pick up Jamie from daycare and head straight there for a quick beer or glass of wine, or stop by in the mornings for breakfast before the heat set in.
Best Iced Coffee in Charlotte
That's a bold claim, but I stand by it. Their iced coffee is by Enderly and it's exceptional - plus it pairs perfectly with their bagels, which are also delicious. My regular order is a plain bagel, double toasted with cream cheese (Jamie's a fan too), and that stellar iced coffee. David and I also love their breakfast burritos. Mine without sausage, his with.

Lunch Done Right
While we initially came for breakfast, their lunch menu is equally strong. I'm particularly devoted to the Tofu You on sourdough with pickled veggies and veganaise. (I'm not vegan, and seriously can't tell the difference!). But honestly, we've never had a bad sandwich here, and neither has anyone we've brought along. My mom swears by their avocado BLT, and their chicken salad is excellent. They also offer a build-your-own option if you're feeling creative.

More Than Just a Cafe
Rhino Market truly lives up to its name as a market. Beyond the food counter, they stock beer, wine, chips, grab-and-go items like hummus and dips, and even everyday essentials like soaps, chocolates, and random personal items. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming, with couches, tables, and those coveted patio spaces creating different atmospheres depending on your mood.
They have beer on tap and by the can or bottle, wine by the glass or bottle, and an extensive selection of non-alcoholic beverages—sodas, waters, juices, and more specialty drinks.
Family-Friendly Features
As parents, we appreciate the thoughtful touches: high chairs, changing tables, and immaculately maintained restrooms. There's a Connect Four game, board games, and even a claw machine that Jamie loves. The staff has always been wonderful with him, and he still talks about the time firefighters stopped in for breakfast and he got to see their truck.

The South Park location also benefits from its surroundings. It's in a parking deck (easy parking!), close to the mall, near Legion Brewery, and surrounded by wide sidewalks perfect for strolling with a stroller. During my maternity leave, this combination of great food, shaded seating, and walkable surroundings made it an ideal destination.

Year-Round Appeal
While I've spent a lot of time talking about the summer patio (because it really is that good), we keep coming back even in winter. The inside is cozy and comfortable, perfect for those mornings when you just want a warm breakfast and good coffee. Sure, Jamie might wander around and leave cream cheese fingerprints on the game pieces, but that's part of the charm of a truly family-friendly spot. Besides, we've learned that "staying put at the table" is more of a suggestion than an expectation when you're two.

Multiple Locations
Rhino Market has locations in Uptown, NoDa, South Park, Wesley Heights, South End, and even at the airport, so you're never too far from great food and coffee.
The Verdict
Whether you're looking for the perfect summer patio, the best iced coffee in Charlotte, a reliable breakfast spot, or a cozy winter refuge, Rhino Market delivers. We've gone from occasional visitors to regulars, and while we might not be there quite as often in winter, it remains one of our favorite Charlotte spots in any season.
