**Tricks and Treats at Carowinds**  
The daytime Halloween event with a trick-or-treat trail, a pumpkin patch, and a costume contest, all of it before the scares come out after dark. It only runs on select days through November 7, so confirm the calendar before you load the car.

**Mecktoberfest Weekend Four**  
The last Ballantyne weekend of Olde Mecklenburg's German beer festival, with a Tyrolean band on Friday night and Sunday and Edelweiss Express on Saturday afternoon. This is a beer hall, so you know your kid's tolerance for crowds better than I do.

A costume race with a 10k, 5k, and one-miler, so even a stroller pusher can jog it. Racers get free admission to the Gardens to see Scarecrow Hollow, and afterward there are firepits, s'mores, and cornhole at the Trailhead Store.

Firefighters cook pancakes for donations, with fire trucks and the mascot Blaze on site. All proceeds go to burn survivors and their families.
